Icelandic I

Objective

The student gets to know the language by listening, reading and doing projects. The text is simple, related to everyday life.

Topics:

Name, address, alphabet, numbers, age, occupation, today, yesterday etc. Names of days and months. Food. Feelings. The body. To wash (oneself / laundry), bath, shower.

Numbers, 1, 2, 3, ... . Telling time, personal identification numbers and telephone numbers.

Time: Year - month - week - day. Know the names of the months and days. Now - later - earlier - before - today - yesterday - tomorrow - after week, month, year.

Location: Here - there - inside - outside - up - down - next - right - left - behind - before - above - below - at home - at work - in school.

Colours: yellow - red - green - blue - black - white and more. People (Persons): Man, woman - a teenager, boy, girl, baby, infant. Wife - husband, boyfriend - girlfriend. Mom - Dad. Grandfather - grandmother. Son - daughter. Aunt - uncle.

Clothes: Pants, skirts, shirts, sweaters, dress, parka, coats, hat, shoes, boots. Accessories: bag, wallet, key, money, clock, alarm clock, glasses. Pencil, pen, bicycle, swimming, books, newspapers, a letter, candle, car, bus, flowers, phone, ambulance.

Pronouns:

I - we. – You - you. - He - she - it. - They.

Mine - Yours - Ours

Verbs:

To be, to have, to want, to read, to write, to learn, to sleep, to go (out, work, school), to come, to drive (car).

Adjectives:

Final objectives and skills

Final project: Pupils prepare and exercise an introduction about them, then talk for two minutes, describing themselves, ending with recording it on video and looking at it.

Icelandic III and IV

Course III and IV both include review on basic grammar and word classes, with more complex grammar and exercises. They don´t have to be taken in the right order, it is possible to attend Icelandic IV before Icelandic III, as the emphasis differs in those courses.

Icelandic III

The emphasis is on talking: The student becomes capable of participating in simple discussion about particular topics.

Main word classes and grammatical outlines of them (prepositions, adjectives, regular and irregular verbs, nouns, adverbs) reviewed. In „nouns“ the usage of dative and genitive cases will be explored, e.g. in relation to movement and position along with subjunctive mood of „to be“ and declension of interrogative pronoun.

More complex text will be looked at along with things like simple Icelandic crossword puzzles and proverbs.

For discussion there are a few previously selected topics but also some topics that relate to interesting contemporary events/conflicts.

Icelandic IV

The emphasis is on writing and spelling: The student becomes capable of writing simple text, gets acquainted with Icelandic keyboard on computers.

Examples of the grammatical topics covered, in addition to the review on some basic points, are; declination of the numbers 1 to 4 and more on subjunctive mood.

Explored are terms like „Annað hvort ______ eða _______“ (either _______ or _______) and similar ones.

Topics in text touch, family, school, media; advertizes, memorials, news, etc.
